Amex Cobalt Review 2026: Best Canadian Travel Card?
Best for
Canadians who spend $600+/month on groceries and dining and want flexible travel rewards (Aeroplan, Avios, hotel transfers). The most-recommended Canadian travel card in 2026.
Not for
Light spenders who can't hit the $750/month threshold for welcome bonus. Customers who prefer cashback over points (try Tangerine Money-Back or MBNA Rewards).
Bottom line
The Amex Cobalt is the best Canadian travel rewards card for most people in 2026. The 5x grocery/dining earn rate is unmatched, MR points transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1 (which makes them effectively the same as the Aeroplan Reserve's points), and the monthly $13 fee structure smooths cash flow. If you spend $750/month on food, this card is essentially a 5% cashback card that you can convert to Aeroplan flights.
4.8 /5 (Our score)
Pros
- Up to 60,000 MR welcome points (~$600 travel value) for $750/mo spend over first year
- 5x MR points on eligible groceries and restaurants in Canada
- 3x MR points on streaming services
- Membership Rewards points transfer 1:1 to Aeroplan, British Airways Avios, and more
- $156 annual fee billed at $13/month — easier on cash flow than annual lump sum
- Insurance package includes travel emergency medical (15 days) and rental car coverage
- Front of the Line ticket access for Amex pre-sales
Cons
- Annual fee at $156 is higher than no-fee competitors
- Amex acceptance still lags Visa/Mastercard at smaller Canadian merchants
- Welcome bonus structure spreads over 12 months — not instant
- Foreign currency transactions cost 2.5%
- MR point value depends on smart redemptions (book travel through Aeroplan transfer)
I have held the Amex Cobalt since 2022. It is the credit card I put roughly 80% of my non-Costco spending on, and has been my most profitable card by a meaningful margin. Here is the honest 2026 review.
Compare the Cobalt with Marriott Bonvoy Amex, MBNA Rewards World Elite, or Tangerine Money-Back. For a full ranking, see Best Travel Credit Cards Canada 2026 and Best Aeroplan Credit Cards. For a complete fee breakdown, see Amex Cobalt Fees Canada 2026.
At a glance
- Annual fee: $156 (billed $13/month)
- Welcome bonus: Up to 60,000 MR points (~$600 travel value)
- Earn rate: 5x groceries, 5x restaurants, 3x streaming, 2x gas/travel, 1x other
- FX fee: 2.5%
- Insurance: Travel emergency medical, rental car, baggage, more
- Best for: $600+/month food spend, flexible travel rewards
The 5x grocery rate is the headline
Almost every Canadian credit card earns 1-2% on groceries. Some specialty cards (CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite, Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite) earn 4% in specific situations. The Amex Cobalt earns 5x MR points uncapped — the highest base earn rate on groceries in Canada, period.
For a household spending $1,000/month on groceries, that’s 60,000 MR points per year on groceries alone. Transferred to Aeroplan, that’s enough for a round-trip economy flight from Toronto to most of North America.
Restaurants are the second 5x category
The Cobalt also earns 5x MR points on eligible restaurants — including coffee shops, fast food, takeout, and delivery. If you spend $500/month dining out (which most middle-income Canadians do, especially with food delivery), that’s another 30,000 MR points/year.
Combined with groceries, a typical Canadian household earns 90,000+ MR points/year just on food, which is worth approximately $900-$1,200 in flight redemptions. After subtracting the $156 annual fee, that’s $750-$1,000+ net annual value from one card.
Why MR transferability matters
Membership Rewards points transfer 1:1 to Aeroplan. So if you need an Aeroplan flight, the Cobalt is functionally identical to the Aeroplan Reserve in earn-to-redemption terms.
But MR is more flexible: it also transfers to British Airways Avios (excellent for short-haul Air Canada flights via the Avios partnership), Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and several other programs. If Aeroplan devalues again (it has, multiple times), MR points hedge the risk by transferring elsewhere.
Where the Cobalt loses
- 2.5% FX fee abroad means you should pair it with a no-FX card (Scotia Passport, Wealthsimple Credit Card) for foreign spending.
- Amex acceptance at smaller merchants and Costco (which only takes Mastercard in Canada) means you need a backup card.
- Welcome bonus is back-loaded — you don’t see all 60,000 points until month 12.
My personal usage
In 2025, I earned 87,000 MR points on the Cobalt. After fees, my net was approximately 77,000 points. I redeemed 65,000 of them on a round-trip Toronto-Vancouver flight in December (saving ~$650 vs the cash fare). The remaining 22,000 sit in my MR account waiting for the next devaluation-resistant transfer opportunity.
Bottom line
If you spend $600+/month on groceries and restaurants and want flexible travel rewards, the Amex Cobalt is the highest-value Canadian credit card available in 2026. Apply via the welcome offer, hit the $750/month spend, and earn back the annual fee 5x over in the first year alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Amex Cobalt welcome bonus in 2026?
The current Amex Cobalt welcome bonus pays up to 60,000 Membership Rewards points (worth approximately $600 in travel value) when you spend $750 each month for the first 12 months of cardholdership. Points are credited monthly — 2,500 per month for the first 12 months, totaling 30,000 points, plus an additional 30,000 if all 12 months hit the $750 threshold. If you only hit some months, you earn proportionally.
What earn rates does the Amex Cobalt offer?
5x MR points on eligible groceries and restaurants in Canada (no annual cap). 3x MR points on eligible streaming services. 2x MR points on travel and gas. 1x MR points on all other purchases. The 5x rates are uncapped — there's no annual maximum on grocery/restaurant earnings.
Is the Amex Cobalt better than the Aeroplan Reserve?
For most people, yes. The Cobalt earns 5x at groceries vs. the Aeroplan Reserve's 3x on Air Canada and 2x on dining. The Cobalt's MR points transfer 1:1 to Aeroplan, so you can convert when you have specific Aeroplan needs. The Aeroplan Reserve only makes sense if you fly Air Canada frequently AND use the Maple Leaf lounge access regularly. For everyday spending plus travel optionality, the Cobalt wins.
What is the Amex Cobalt annual fee?
$156 per year, billed at $13/month rather than as one annual charge. The monthly billing structure is uncommon among premium Canadian cards (most charge $120-$599 annually) and makes the cost feel less significant. There's no fee waiver in the first year — you pay $13/month from the first statement.
Does the Amex Cobalt have travel insurance?
Yes. The Cobalt includes travel emergency medical (15 days, up to $5M), trip interruption ($1,500), flight delay ($500 after 4 hours), baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage, hotel/motel burglary, and rental car loss/damage waiver. Travel medical applies to those under 65; older travelers should still buy supplementary medical coverage.
Can I transfer Amex Cobalt MR points to Aeroplan?
Yes. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer 1:1 to Aeroplan, British Airways Avios, Marriott Bonvoy (1:1), Hilton Honors (1:1), and other partner programs. Transfers are typically instant for Aeroplan and Avios. This flexibility is the Cobalt's biggest advantage over single-program cards like the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite.
Is Amex accepted at all Canadian retailers?
Amex acceptance in Canada is solid but lags Visa/Mastercard at smaller merchants. Most major retailers, restaurants, and grocery stores accept Amex. Smaller restaurants, some independent shops, and Costco (Costco Canada accepts only Mastercard) do not. Most Cobalt holders pair it with a no-fee Visa or Mastercard for fallback.
Is the Cobalt good for foreign travel?
The Cobalt charges a 2.5% foreign transaction fee on non-CAD purchases — same as most Canadian cards. For overseas spending, pair the Cobalt with the Scotia Passport Visa Infinite (no FX fees). Use the Cobalt at home in Canada to earn the 5x grocery/dining rate, and the Scotia card abroad.
What's the minimum spending for the Cobalt welcome bonus?
$750 each month for 12 consecutive months. If you average ~$25/day in groceries and restaurants, you'll easily hit it. If you spend less than $750 in a given month, you earn 0 of that month's 2,500 bonus points (the rest of your normal earnings still apply). You can earn the welcome bonus partially if you skip months.
