How Long Does Wealthsimple Take? Deposits & Transfers (2026)

By Alex Francisco

Last updated:

Short version: money moving into Wealthsimple is usually quick, money moving back out takes a little longer, and moving an existing account over from another broker is the slow one — plan for weeks, not days. I’ve done all three on my own account, so here’s what actually happens at each step and why the wait exists.

Deposits: same-day to a few business days

When you add cash from a linked Canadian bank, Wealthsimple splits it into two experiences.

Instant deposit

A portion of your deposit is usually made available to trade right away — often somewhere in the low-thousands-of-dollars range, depending on how long you’ve held the account and your standing. The rest lands once the bank transfer settles. This is what lets you buy a stock the same afternoon you fund your self-directed account .

Regular bank deposit (EFT)

The underlying electronic funds transfer (EFT) from your chequing account typically takes about 2–5 business days to fully settle. You’ll often see the balance in your account before it has truly cleared. Timing depends on your bank and its cut-off times, so verify current timing on Wealthsimple’s site.

The deposit hold most people don’t expect

Even after cash shows up, there’s usually a hold before you can withdraw that same money back out — commonly around 5 business days. This isn’t Wealthsimple being difficult; it protects against reversed or fraudulent transfers, and every Canadian broker does something similar. The practical takeaway: don’t deposit money on Monday expecting to pull it back out Wednesday. If you might need the cash quickly, a Wealthsimple Cash balance behaves more like everyday money.

Transferring an account in from another broker (the slow one)

This is the timeline people underestimate. Moving a TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA in from another institution — an “account transfer,” not a cash deposit — typically takes 2 to 6 weeks, and occasionally longer if your old broker is slow or the paperwork needs a correction.

Why so long? Your current institution has to validate the request, move or liquidate the holdings, and send them over — a process that still runs partly on cheques and faxes behind the scenes. Wealthsimple usually reimburses the transfer-out fee your old broker charges (up to a set amount, above a minimum transfer size), but confirm the current terms before you count on it.

A few things that speed it up:

  • Make sure your name and address match exactly at both institutions.
  • Transfer “in kind” if you want to keep your holdings rather than sell them.
  • Start it and forget it — checking daily won’t move it faster.

There’s a full walkthrough in the TFSA transfer guide linked below.

Withdrawals: getting money back to your bank

Withdrawing to a linked bank account by EFT usually takes about 1 to 3 business days to land. Two things can stretch that:

  1. Recently deposited cash may still be inside its hold window (see above).
  2. Invested money has to be sold first, and trades take a day to settle before the proceeds are withdrawable.

So a realistic worst case — sell today, wait for settlement, then wait for the EFT — can run several business days end to end. Worth knowing before you promise that money to someone by Friday.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an instant deposit take on Wealthsimple?

A portion of your deposit — often in the low thousands, depending on your account age and standing — is available to trade within minutes. The rest arrives once the underlying bank transfer settles, usually within a few business days.

Why can't I withdraw money I just deposited?

New deposits typically sit under a hold of around 5 business days before you can withdraw them back to your bank. It's a fraud-protection window that guards against reversed or bounced transfers, and it's standard across Canadian brokers.

How long does a TFSA or RRSP transfer to Wealthsimple take?

Transferring an existing registered account in from another institution usually takes 2 to 6 weeks. Your old broker controls much of that timeline, and mismatched name or address details are the most common cause of delays.

How long do Wealthsimple withdrawals take?

An EFT withdrawal to a linked bank account generally lands in 1 to 3 business days. It can take longer if you sold investments first, since trades need a day to settle, or if the cash is still inside a deposit hold.

Does Wealthsimple charge for deposits, transfers, or withdrawals?

Standard EFT deposits and withdrawals don't carry a fee. For account transfers in from another broker, Wealthsimple often reimburses the transfer-out fee your old institution charges above a minimum balance — confirm the current terms first.
