The Ontario trillium benefit (OTB) is how Ontario pays three of its tax credits: the Ontario sales tax credit (OSTC), the Ontario energy and property tax credit (OEPTC) and the Northern Ontario energy credit (NOEC). The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) adds them up, divides the year’s total by 12 and pays it on the 10th of each month. The box below shows the next payment date, followed by what each credit is worth for July 2026 to June 2027.

How to read this table: these are the dates the CRA issues OTB payments. The July 2026 payment starts the 2026 benefit year, which runs to June 2027 and is based on the 2025 tax return. The January to June 2027 dates are added when the CRA lists them. How to read this table: the OTB is the total of whichever credits you qualify for. 'Family' means a couple or a single parent. Seniors are people who were 64 or older on December 31, 2025.
| Credit | Helps with | Maximum per year | Reduced by | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario sales tax credit (OSTC) | Sales tax | $378 per adult and per child | 4% of adjusted net income over $29,047 (single) or adjusted family net income over $36,309 (couples and single parents) | No application; file the 2025 tax return |
| Ontario energy and property tax credit (OEPTC) | Sales tax on energy and property tax (including property tax built into rent) | $1,307 (under 64) or $1,488 (64 or older); $290 on a reserve or in a public long-term care home | 2% of adjusted family net income over $29,047 (single, under 64); higher thresholds for families and seniors | Form ON-BEN with the 2025 return (tick box 61020) |
| Northern Ontario energy credit (NOEC) | Higher home energy costs in the north | $189 (single) or $290 (family) | 1% of adjusted family net income over $50,833 (single) or $65,356 (family) | Form ON-BEN with the 2025 return (tick box 61040) |

What is the Ontario trillium benefit?
The OTB is not a separate program you apply for. It is the payment that carries three credits, each with its own rules:
- Ontario sales tax credit. A credit for the sales tax that low- and moderate-income Ontarians pay. It needs no application: filing a tax return is enough.
- Ontario energy and property tax credit. Help with property tax and the sales tax on home energy. Renters qualify because part of their rent pays the building’s property tax. It is claimed on Form ON-BEN.
- Northern Ontario energy credit. An extra amount for the higher energy costs in Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Timiskaming districts, also claimed on Form ON-BEN.
Being entitled to any one of the three is enough to get an OTB payment. Ontario funds the benefit, the CRA runs it, and Ontario adjusts the amounts every year for inflation using the Ontario Consumer Price Index.
The OTB is paid separately from the federal Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which the CRA lists as the former GST/HST credit, and on different dates. Ontario says its sales tax credit does not affect the federal GST/HST credit payments.
How much is the Ontario trillium benefit for 2026?
The 2026 benefit year runs from July 2026 to June 2027, and every amount is based on the 2025 tax return. The maximums:
- Sales tax credit: up to $378 for each adult and each child in the family. It is reduced by 4% of adjusted net income above $29,047 for a single person with no children, or 4% of adjusted family net income above $36,309 for couples and single parents. When a spouse is 64 or older, a seniors’ threshold of $37,273 can apply instead.
- Energy and property tax credit: up to $1,307 for people under 64 ($290 energy component plus $1,017 property tax component) and up to $1,488 for seniors ($290 plus $1,198). People on a reserve or in a public long-term care home can get up to $290. It is reduced by 2% of adjusted family net income above the threshold for the household.
- Northern Ontario energy credit: up to $189 for a single person and $290 for a family, reduced by 1% of adjusted family net income above $50,833 (single) or $65,356 (family). It stops completely at $69,733 (single) and $94,356 (family).
The reduction thresholds for the energy and property tax credit depend on age and household:
How to read this table: 'senior' means 64 or older on December 31, 2025. A single parent is someone who was not married or common-law on December 31, 2025 and has a child under 18 in their care on the first day of the payment month, according to the CRA's benefit records.
| Household on December 31, 2025 | Reduced by 2% of adjusted family net income above |
|---|---|
| Single, no children, under 64 | $29,047 |
| Couple (both under 64), or single parent under 64 | $36,309 |
| Single senior (64+), no children | $36,309 |
| Couple with a spouse 64+, or single senior parent | $43,571 |

In effect from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027; checked September 30, 2026.
The CRA pays each credit to one person per family. The energy and property tax credit and the Northern Ontario energy credit go to the spouse who completed Form ON-BEN for the couple, and the sales tax credit goes to whichever spouse’s return is assessed first. The exception is a couple where only one spouse was 64 or older on December 31, 2025: that spouse must apply for the energy and property tax credit and the Northern Ontario energy credit for both, and also receives the sales tax credit.
How is the Ontario trillium benefit calculated?
The CRA works it out; nothing is calculated on the tax return itself. For anyone who wants to check the number, the energy and property tax credit follows the CRA’s 2026 calculation sheets:
- Occupancy cost = 20% of the rent paid for 2025, plus the property tax paid for 2025. A designated student residence counts as $25.
- Energy component = the occupancy cost (not counting the $25 student residence amount), capped at $290.
- Property tax component = 10% of the occupancy cost (capped at $944) plus $73, or for seniors 10% of the occupancy cost (capped at $581) plus $617, but never more than the occupancy cost itself.
- Credit = energy component + property tax component, minus 2% of adjusted family net income above the household threshold.
The sales tax credit is simpler: $378 per person minus 4% of income above the threshold. Three worked examples for the 2026 benefit year, using only these published figures:
A newcomer renting in Brampton. A single person, under 64, who moved to Brampton in 2024 and paid $2,100 a month in rent for all of 2025, with adjusted net income of $40,000:
- Occupancy cost: $5,040. Energy component: capped at $290.
- Property tax component: $577.
- Reduction: $219.06, so the credit is $647.94.
- Sales tax credit: none, because the income reduction wipes out the $378.
- OTB for the year: $647.94, over $500, so it is paid monthly at about $54.00 a month.
The same renter with adjusted net income of $25,000 is below the $29,047 threshold, so nothing is taken off: $1,245 for the year, or about $103.75 a month.
A single renter in Sudbury. Under 64, $1,200 a month rent in 2025 and adjusted net income of $30,000:
- Energy and property tax credit: $631.94.
- Sales tax credit: $339.88.
- Northern Ontario energy credit: the full $189, because income is under $50,833.
- OTB: $1,160.82 for the year, about $96.74 a month.
A senior couple who own a home in Ottawa. Both 66, $4,000 of property tax paid for 2025, adjusted family net income of $45,000:
- Energy and property tax credit: $1,278.42.
- Sales tax credit for two people, using the seniors’ threshold: $446.92.
- OTB: $1,725.34 for the year, about $143.78 a month. Seniors who also get the Ontario senior homeowners’ property tax grant (up to $500, paid separately) only see the property tax component reduced if that component plus the grant is more than the property tax paid for 2025. Here it stays below the $4,000 paid, and the CRA says most seniors are not affected.
These examples assume the full year in one Ontario home and no other adjustments. The CRA’s child and family benefits calculator gives an estimate, and the Ontario income tax calculator shows the tax side of the same income.
What are the Ontario trillium benefit payment dates?
The OTB is paid on the 10th of each month, so Trillium deposit dates follow one simple rule. When the 10th falls on a Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday, the CRA pays it on the last working day before. That is why the 2026 calendar shows January 9, May 8 and October 9 instead of the 10th.
The CRA had not listed the January to June 2027 dates on September 30, 2026. Applying its rule to the 2027 calendar gives:
- January 2027: Friday, January 8
- February 2027: Wednesday, February 10
- March 2027: Wednesday, March 10
- April 2027: Friday, April 9
- May 2027: Monday, May 10
- June 2027: Thursday, June 10, the date the CRA has published for the end of the benefit year
Check these against CRA My Account or the CRA payment dates calendar once the CRA publishes them.
Two things move the first payment of a benefit year:
- Return assessed by June 19, 2026: the first 2026 payment was July 10, 2026.
- Return assessed after June 19, 2026: the first payment arrives within four to eight weeks after the assessment and includes the months already missed. Monthly payments on the 10th follow.
The OTB comes by direct deposit for anyone whose tax refund or other benefits already go to a bank account; everyone else gets a cheque. Setting up direct deposit through CRA My Account needs the account’s transit, institution and account numbers, which are printed on a void cheque or the bank’s direct deposit form.
Monthly or lump sum: how is the OTB paid?
How the money arrives depends on the annual total, not on a choice most people make:
How to read this table: the annual entitlement is the total of all three credits. The total is the same whichever way it is paid, and the CRA adds no interest to a delayed payment.
| Annual OTB entitlement | How it is paid |
|---|---|
| $2 or less | No payment |
| More than $2 but less than $10 | One payment of $10 |
| $10 to $500 | One lump sum in the first payment month (usually July 2026) |
| More than $500 | 12 monthly payments from July 2026 to June 2027, or one payment on June 10, 2027 if box 61060 on Form ON-BEN was ticked |

In effect from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027; checked September 30, 2026.
The one real choice is for people entitled to more than $500: tick box 61060 on Form ON-BEN to receive the whole year in one payment on June 10, 2027. The rules around it:
- The choice covers every credit in the OTB, not just one.
- It can only be made on the return as first filed. For the 2025 return, the last chance is December 31, 2026, and only if that return has not been filed yet.
- It has to be made again every year.
- Someone who changes their mind can call the CRA at 1-877-627-6645 or write to their tax centre. The months already owed are paid within four to eight weeks, then monthly payments resume.
- The CRA cancels the choice if the person moves out of Ontario, goes bankrupt, dies or is incarcerated for 90 days or more.
A single June payment works like forced savings. Monthly payments reach the household sooner, and the CRA pays no interest for waiting.
Who qualifies for the Ontario trillium benefit?
Each credit has its own test. For the 2026 benefit year:
Energy and property tax credit (OEPTC). You must have lived in Ontario on December 31, 2025, and at some time before June 1, 2027 be 18 or older, or be (or have been) married or common-law, or be a parent who lives or lived with your child. In 2025 at least one of these must also apply:
- You paid property tax on your main home in Ontario.
- You rented a main home whose landlord had to pay property tax. Tax-exempt social housing does not count, so tenants in subsidized units should ask their landlord.
- You lived on a reserve and paid your home energy costs.
- You lived in a public long-term care home and paid for accommodation.
- You lived in a designated university, college or private school residence.
Sales tax credit (OSTC). At some time before June 1, 2027, you must be an Ontario resident and be 19 or older, or be (or have been) married or common-law, or be a parent who lives or lived with your child. No rent or property tax is needed.
Northern Ontario energy credit (NOEC). You must have lived in one of the ten northern districts on December 31, 2025, meet the same age test as the energy and property tax credit, and in 2025 have paid rent or property tax on your main home, long-term care accommodation, or home energy costs on a reserve.
Two timing rules catch people. You must live in Ontario on the first day of each month to get that month’s payment, so someone who moves to Alberta on August 15, 2026 keeps the July and August payments only. And someone who moved to Ontario from another province in 2026 cannot get the 2026 energy and property tax credit, because they were not an Ontario resident on December 31, 2025.
Newcomers to Canada do not need citizenship. A newcomer who arrived in 2025 and was renting in Ontario on December 31 can claim the 2026 OEPTC on their first return, adding Form RC66SCH to report income from January 1, 2025 to the arrival date. The newcomer tax return guide walks through that first filing, and a Social Insurance Number is needed before filing.
How do you apply for the Ontario trillium benefit?
The application is the tax return. The steps:
- File a 2025 income tax and benefit return, even with no income to report. The deadline is April 30 each year; filing on time keeps the payments starting in July. The Canadian tax deadline guide lists the dates.
- Complete Form ON-BEN, which is in the Ontario tax package. Certified tax software asks the questions and fills it in.
- Enter the 2025 amounts that apply to you, using the boxes in the table below. Roommates enter only their own share of the rent. Couples who lived together on December 31, 2025 enter the total for both, and only one of them applies.
- Keep your receipts. They are not sent with the return, but the CRA can ask for them later.
- Watch for the OTB notice that follows your notice of assessment. It shows the annual amount and how it will be paid.
How to read this table: box 61070 applies for the Ontario senior homeowners' property tax grant, which is on the same form but paid separately from the OTB, about four to eight weeks after assessment.
| Box | What it is for |

Some amounts cannot go in box 61100 or 61120: rent paid to relatives or friends who do not report it as rental income, condo fees (except the part that pays property tax), charges for meals or other services bundled into rent, rent or tax on the part of a home used for business or rented out, and a cottage or other second home.
What if an Ontario trillium benefit payment is late or missing?
The CRA asks people to wait 10 working days after the payment date before contacting it. Ontario.ca puts it another way: contact the CRA if a payment has not arrived by July 24, or by the 24th of any later month. Then:
- Check CRA My Account. It shows the next payment, past payments and the OTB notice.
- Check that the 2025 return was assessed. If it was assessed after June 19, 2026, the first payment comes four to eight weeks after the assessment.
- Check that Form ON-BEN went in. Without it, only the sales tax credit is paid. A missed form can be added later through an adjustment request in My Account or Form T1-ADJ.
- Check your address, bank account and any CRA debt. The CRA uses OTB payments to pay down amounts owed to it or its partners, including family support arrears.
- Call the CRA at 1-877-627-6645. Questions about Ontario’s policy, rather than a payment, go to the Province of Ontario at 1-866-668-8297.
If the CRA denies the credit or pays less than expected, the notice of assessment explains how to file a formal objection, which can be done in My Account.
What changes next for the Ontario trillium benefit?
- Each July a new benefit year starts. The July 2027 to June 2028 OTB will be based on the 2026 tax return, filed by April 30, 2027, with a new Form ON-BEN.
- Indexation. Ontario raises the amounts for inflation each year. From the 2025 to the 2026 benefit year, the sales tax credit rose from $371 to $378 per person, and its reduction thresholds rose from $28,506 to $29,047 (single) and from $35,632 to $36,309 (family).
- 2027 amounts. The CRA publishes new calculation sheets for each benefit year. This page is updated when the 2027 figures and the first-half 2027 payment dates appear.
Common mistakes with the Ontario trillium benefit
- Not filing because income was low. No return means no OTB, including the sales tax credit.
- Skipping Form ON-BEN. Renters miss the energy and property tax credit, which is often the largest part.
- Entering monthly rent instead of the 2025 total in box 61100, or the whole household’s rent when sharing with roommates.
- Both spouses applying, or the younger spouse applying when only one is 64 or older.
- Expecting the energy and property tax credit in the year of a move to Ontario. That credit, and the Northern Ontario energy credit, look at where you lived on December 31 of the tax year.
- Waiting for a monthly payment after a July lump sum. An annual total of $500 or less is paid in July only.
- Forgetting box 61060 is annual. The one-payment choice has to be made on every return.
